Amharic Learning

Whether you are:

• A complete beginner
• An intermediate speaker seeking clarity
• An advanced learner wanting grammatical precision

You will be guided through a clear and coherent system.

We meet students at their current level —
but we always teach within a structured programme designed to build long-term mastery.

Our Teaching Method

From the verb outwards

Amharic is a structurally rich Semitic language.
To master it efficiently, you must understand how it is built.

Our programme begins with:

• Verb classification (bi-radical, tri-radical, quadri-radical types)
• Stem formation patterns
• Conjugation systems
• Inflectional morphology
• How word classes interact around the verb

Rather than teaching isolated grammar topics, we guide students through a carefully structured sequence that reveals how the entire system fits together.

Students learn to:

• Recognise verb types instantly
• Predict conjugation patterns
• Understand sentence structure
• Read and write with confidence
• Move beyond memorisation into true structural fluency

structure & pronunciation combined

Many native speakers bring strong pronunciation but cannot systematically break down the language.

Many Western instructors understand grammatical structure but lack full command of pronunciation patterns and phonetic rules.

Our programme brings both together.

Students are trained in correct pronunciation throughout — not as a separate skill, but integrated into every stage of grammatical development.

You do not simply learn how the language is built.
You learn how it sounds, how it moves, and how it is used accurately.

Our Structured Programme

AGA Online Learning offers a carefully sequenced Amharic curriculum designed to build deep structural mastery. Each module builds on the previous one, guiding students from foundational grammar to advanced verb systems and sentence architecture.

AMH101

Introduction to Amharic Language

This module establishes the structural framework of the language.

Students learn:

• Core word classes (nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc.)
• Sentence structure and basic syntax
• Possessive constructions
• Introduction to the verb system
• Personal pronouns
• Demonstrative pronouns
• Interrogative pronouns
• Definite article usage

From the beginning, students are trained to see how components interact within the sentence.

Correct pronunciation and phonetic awareness are reinforced throughout.

The focus is clarity, structure, and grammatical awareness — not memorised phrases.

AMH201

Basic Amharic Grammar

This module introduces the full architecture of verb conjugation.

Students learn:

• Verb classifications (bi-radical, tri-radical, quadri-radical)
• Stem formation principles
• Tense and aspect systems
• Inflection rules
• Subject agreement (singular, plural, gender distinctions)
• Conjugation patterns across verb types

Every major verb form is covered in depth.

Students are trained to:

• Identify verb types immediately
• Predict conjugation patterns
• Understand how inflection shapes meaning

Pronunciation rules continue to be integrated alongside morphological development, ensuring accuracy in both form and sound.

Throughout the module, we integrate grammar into sentence construction — moving from isolated forms into structured usage.

AMH301

Advanced Amharic Grammar

This module is a deep structural dive into complex verb systems.

Students explore:

• Advanced verb stem classifications
• Passive stems
• Causative stems
• Reduplicative forms
• Extended and derived patterns beyond basic radical types
• Advanced inflection systems

We examine how complex verb forms are constructed, how they are conjugated, and how they function in real sentence environments.

Students develop precision in both advanced grammatical control and refined pronunciation.

Structural Application Across All Modules

Grammar is never taught in isolation.

At every stage, students learn how to integrate new structures into:

• Simple sentences
• Compound sentences
• Complex sentences

We show not only how forms are built —
but how they operate in real linguistic contexts.

The result is not fragmented knowledge,
but structural fluency.

Theory + Practical Application

Our teaching combines:
• Clear theoretical explanation (how the system works)
• Guided practical drills
• Interactive exercises
• Structured reading practice
• Spoken application
• Written production

Students do not just repeat sounds — they understand what they are producing.

This dual approach helps learners progress confidently from:
Script → Sound → Structure → Sentence → Fluency

For Complete Beginners

Starting from the Foundations

No prior knowledge of Amharic is required.

We provide structured instruction for students who are completely new to the language — including those unfamiliar with the Ethiopic (Fidäl) script and phonetic system.

Our beginner pathway includes:

• Systematic introduction to the Fidäl (Ethiopic script)
• Phonetic training and pronunciation drills
• Sound recognition and production practice
• Structured reading development
• Guided writing exercises

Rather than overwhelming students with vocabulary lists, we build from sound to structure.

Students first learn how the script and phonetic system work.

Then we gradually introduce grammatical structure, beginning with the verb system and expanding outward.
